Another preseason is in the book after last night's 27-20 loss to the Jets in the preseason finale to finish 2-2. Now all the players can do is wait and hope that they have done enough to show the coaches they are deserving of making the 53 man opening day roster. All teams must have their roster down to 53 by 6pm on Saturday Aug 31st. What the heck I might as well join the club and throw my expected 53 man roster like the rest of the world so here is my prediction for my Eagles opening day roster when roster cuts are finalized…
Update: Eagles released the following players at 1:30pm on Friday: LB Everette Brown, DT Antonio Dixon, QB Dennis Dixon, DE David King, QB G.J. Kinne, OL Matt Kopa, CB Trevard Lindley (waived with injury settlement), WR Ifeanyi Momah, WR Will Murphy, OL Dallas Reynolds, LB Adrian Robinson, OL Matt Tennant
The Eagles also placed DE Joe Kruger on the Injured Reserve list with a shoulder injury.
So far so good....
In: Michael Vick, Nick Foles, Matt Barkley
Out: Dennis Dixon, G.J. Kinne
Comments: Really no brainer here. People keep talking that Foles needs to start or get traded. He clearly hasn’t shown he can outplay Vick especially in the 4th preseason game against backups. But one thing he has shown is that he can run a variation of Chip Kelly’s offense and why would you trade an asset like that knowing Michael Vick’s track record of not staying healthy. He is a quality backup and right now his trade value is in the toilet until a team’s starter goes down the tube but then really will team’s think that Foles can be a savior to their team’s season? Highly doubt it
Running backs (3)
In: LeSean McCoy, Bryce Brown,Chris Polk
Out: Matthew Tucker
Comments: Solid group of backs if Brown can start hanging onto the football and if McCoy can stay healthy. We could see another 3-headed monster in Philadelphia! Look for Tucker to get signed to the practice squad.
Wide receivers (6)
In: DeSean Jackson, Jason Avant, Riley Cooper, Damaris Johnson, Russell Shepard Greg Salas
Out: Jeff Maehl, Ifeanyi Momah, Will Murphy
Comments: I feel Greg Salas has done enough to push for a spot on his team. Him and Russell Shepard have shown they have potential that they can make plays in Kelly’s offense. And like what they have done in practice. Plus the Eagles are pretty thing at WR. Cooper and Johnson have been plagued by injuries the last few seasons and we all know D-Jack with his size is one hit away from getting knocked out. Maehl is a Oregon guy so I see him being placed on the practice squad so Chip can keep him around just incase.
Tight ends (4)
In: Brent Celek, James Casey, Zach Ertz, Clay Harbor
Out: Emil Igwenagu
Comments: We know Chip Kelly loves his heavy tight end sets so expect him to go heavy at the position. Casey is listed as a TE/FB hybrid type of player so the last position came down to Harbo and Igwenagu. It really is a coin flip but I went with Harbor because of his veteran experience and is average blocking skills.
Offensive line (10)
In: Jason Peters, Lane Johnson, Evan Mathis, Todd Herremans, Jason Kelce, Allen Barbre, Julian Vandervelde, Dennis Kelly, Matt Tobin, Danny Watkins,
Out: Matt Kopa, Matt Tennant, Dallas Reynolds, Michael Bamiro
Comments: Really not too much surprise except maybe Watkins making the team but I feel management just isn’t ready to admit that he was a wasted 1st round pick so they give him another chance to be a backup.
Defensive line (7)
In: Cedric Thornton, Isaac Sopoaga, Fletcher Cox, Bennie Logan, Damion Square, Clifton Geathers, Vinny Curry
Out: Dave King, Antonio Dixon, Joe Kruger
Comments: Not much too really say. Those guys were a stretch to make the team anyway.
In: Trent Cole, Connor Barwin, DeMeco Ryans, Mychal Kendricks, Brandon Graham, Chris McCoy, Jake Knott, Emmanuel Acho
Out: Travis Long, Everette Brown, Casey Matthews, Adrian Robinson
Comments: Acho, played for defensive coordinator Billy Davis last year in Cleveland, where Davis coached linebackers so feels Davis will put his input to have Acho stay especially after a solid performance in the final preseason game. Jake knott and Chris McCoy were guys that are on the bubble but the Eagles need depth at this position for their new 3-4 hybrid scheme and these guys have shined at times. Many people also felt that Graham was gone but the only thing that this defense has going for them is they can establish a pass rush. We haven’t seen much of that from Graham and Cole but these are two guys that know how to get to the quarterback and you can’t just get rid of talent like that.
CB In: Cary Williams, Bradley Fletcher, Brandon Boykin, Brandon Hughes, Jordan Poyer,
S In: Patrick Chung, Earl Wolff, Colt Anderson, Nate Allen
Out: Curtis Marsh, Trevard Lindley, Kurt Coleman, David Sims
Comments: Im sort of up in the air with this. This is a group that has struggled all preseason. I see the Eagles going at least five CBs and four Safeties. So I basically judged them on how much playing time each guy has gotten and depth chart and their role on this football team. Marsh has been a 3rd round bust. Lindley has been on and off this team for years so I feel they go with power since a young kid that has shown some glimpse that he can play. And the last position for safety came down to Anderson and Coleman. Anderson has been named special team’s MVP numerous times so his play on coverage units I feel gives him the edge over Coleman. Allen will be the starter week 1 I feel but Wolff was a steal in the draft and will eventually take over the starting job sometime this season.
There is still a chance that some of these names get cut after the final cuts because I expect the Birds to look at the waiver wire from other team's releases... So some of these guys still should be sweating it out...
In: Alex Henery, Donnie Jones, Jon Dorenbos
Comments: No other backup kickers or punters on the roster so… Only way this is happening if Chip decides he is going to suit up and take over the kicking duites.
