Chase's Fox Five 4.18.11

1. Sixers/Heat game 2 - They can do it. Pull another a stunning upset that is.

However, for the Sixers to defeat the Heat, and steal a game in Miami, they'll need a list of things.

More scoring from Andre Iguodala. He's one of the few Sixers can that can his own shot against the stingy Heat defense.

More point guard domination from Jrue Holiday. Mario Chalmbers, nor Mike Bibby can stay with the 20 year old. The Heat may give up some offense from Dwyane Wade and put him on Holiday at some point during the series.

Use Jodie Meeks and/or Lou Williams to shoot Miami out of its zone that stifled the Sixers in Saturday's second period.

Another solid thirty minutes from Thad Young, who's too fast for Chris Bosh and too big for Wade to guard. Young can flourish in this series.

Less minutes from the bench. The Sixers bench has thrived this year - but that was against other bench units. The Heat's bench squad will almost have an All Star out on the floor, whether it be James, Wade or Bosh, and that's just too much talent for the Sixers second unit.

If the Sixers can achieve some of the above, they could maintain a big lead, like the one they had in the first quarter, or come back from a small deficit and overtake the Heat and secure a victory in Miami.

2. Worried about Contreras - Such was the theme of a notes column on Philly.com this morning. Contreras had a twenty two pitch, nine strike effort in yesterday's win over Florida.

There will be games like this. Even the best closers endure extended innings from time to time. Big Jose should be alright, and if he's not...you can always call up Michael Stutes, who's got eleven K's in just six and 6 2/3 innings of work with the Iron Pigs.

3. The Royals or Indians - With a team ERA of 3.16 (young Justin Masterson is 3-0, ERA of 1.33), I'd have to say the Indians. But what I really like is that former slugger Travis Hafner, looks healthy and is mashing once again. Now if the Indians can get Grazy Sizemore back to full health and productivity, this is a team that could contend all year in what looks like a mediocre AL Central.

4. Where's the offense- So much for the Braves having a vaunted offense. Nate Mclouth is hitting, or hitting in this case, like last year. Jason Heyward's at .240 and Dan Uggla is below .200. So while Chipper Jones is going through a rebirth, hitting .321, the rest of the Braves offense is struggling mightly, and with the way the Phillies are winning ball games, Atlanta could easily let the division slip away in late April, early May.

5. Bad matchups - Memphis wanted the Spurs all along, and they did them in yesterday, and the series will be tougher for SA to win, the longer Manu is out. And the Lakers lack of a point guard is what let Chris Paul run wild yesterday. Could the top two seeds in the West go down in the first round. Could my pick of the Mavs winning the title actually be accurate? Dallas would need some help (and toughness?) to win a championship but San Antonio and the Lakers succumbing early could be that aid for the Mavericks.

Chase's Fox Five 4.14.11

1. Halladay dominant again - Ok, so there was a hiccup in the ninth inning. It was actually a pleasant surprise to see Halladay challenged for once. Not that I thought he was going to succumb to the Nationals' rally - well, OK, maybe they could've blooped a ball for a hit and a run - but Halladay's become so nearly unhittable that it's downright boring to watch him. Nine K's, just six hits, and just two walks. Halladay is on pace to go 29 and 0. That's unreachable but 25 wins isn't totally unthinkable with the stuff Roy's started the season with.

2. 41 and 41 - Count me as someone who didn't think the Sixers could be a .500 team this year. But potential coach of the year, Doug Collins, did nothing short of being a wizard with very little truly special NBA talent to work with. He helpee Jrue Holiday become a veteran PG at just twenty years old. He helped revitalize Elton Brand. He got useful minutes out of Spencer Hawes. He turned AI into a guy who'd other teams actually would want. Doug Collins, over Tom Thibodeau and Gregg Popovich should be the NBA coach of the year.

2 1/2. Sadly, the Sixers run in the playoffs could be a short one.

Three games, and not much of a chance for the Sixers in any of them. Miami's had trouble against bigger team this year, but the Sixers aren't a big team. And they don't have the wing defenders to stop two of the best wing scorers in the league.

Prediction: Miami in five.

4. Bonds is guilty (on one count) - Another great article from Jayson Stark, on the Bonds verdict.

These are the paragraphs that resonated the most with me, furthering my belief that during the era, 'everybody did steroids'...

But it was the other two players who made it into the witness' chair that were most deserving of our attention.

There was Randy Velarde. He laid out a must-read tale of being referred, by teammate Bobby Estalella, to Anderson for the finest test-beating drugs around. Then the two of them would meet up in -- yikes! -- "various parking lots," where Anderson would inject him with the goods. Right there in the lot. Between the white lines. No details available on whether they set the parking brake first.

And finally, there was Marvin Benard. He talked about how he started using veterinary steroids in Mexico, then took advantage of having a premium supplier like Anderson hanging around his clubhouse and upgraded to BALCO's "better, cleaner stuff."

And these weren't players setting out to break baseball's most hallowed records, friends. They weren't among the 10 or 12 "cheaters" we spend all our time obsessing on when we discuss this embarrassing period of baseball history.

We're talking Randy Velarde and Marvin Benard. They never had a 20-homer season in their lives, let alone a 70-homer season.

Guys who hit 50+ homers were using PEDs, and guys who hit fifteen homers, just trying to hang onto Major League gigs were using PEDs.

So if you thought the "Steroid Era" was a misused descriptor, you're wrong.

Further than, four...
- The flame throwing Aroldis Chapman isn't throwing a hundred anymore.
- I'd assume the postseason success - or failure - will determine if the Heat will consider trading Chris Bosh. If they did, would the experiment of the Big Three be considered an enormous flop.
- Kobe appealing the 100K fine.
- Michael Vick as an endorser is working out.

Chase's Fox Five 4.11.11

1. Hamels is excellent - See, no need for concern. Hamels head is screwed on perfectly straight. He was dominant yesterday pitching a combined shut out with eight strikeouts and just one walk and four hits allowed.

You should feel ashamed that you panned him last week during his first start. Unless you were booing Cliff Lee, from your couch, on Friday night, because he was terrible.

These games are going to happen. Lee, Hamels and Oswalt are going to get hit around every now and then. They're not the pitching immortals that their teammate Roy Halladay is, who seemingly never gets touched up for more than three runs.

2. If this were a power poll... - The Rangers would lead the at 7-2, right now. If they're going to get good pitching from the back of their rotation, Matt Harrison and Derek Holland, it's over. Over. Over. Over. They will be far and away the best team in the AL, maybe even in all of baseball.

It's got to be terrorizing for pitchers to have to go through some combination of Elvis Andrus, Ian Kinsler, Josh Hamilton, Adrian Beltre, and Nelson Cruz. And that doesn't even include Michael Young, who's not gotten many at bats so far this season.

Texas, without Cliff Lee, may be better than they were last year.

3. Manny's outta here - Manny chose retirement over sitting out for a hundred games due to failing a second PED test.

I'm not going to regurgitate my thoughts on the steroid era and it's players, as I always do on AFR, but I'll remember Manny as the greatest right handed hitter of my life, and second best hitter of my time, behind Barry Bonds.

But I'll also remember he was selfish for using the Rays - and leaving them hanging -for one last contract. And for some of his loopy antics out in left field.

Former Astro Morgan Ensberg calls out Manny. And yes Manny's a coward for not being candid about his suspension and his legacy, but it must be acknowledged that Manny's one of the most aloof athletes to ever play any sport. The only person Manny answers to, is Manny. And in an outlandish way, I respect that.

And yes, don't underestimate how big of trouble the Rays are in. They can't seem to score more than one run, evidenced by the fact that they have five regulars not hitting over .200. Gulp. Gonna be a long year for me as a Rays fan. Longoria can't get back from the strained oblique fast enough. But then again, does he really want to come back so he can lead the league in walks, from the lack of protection that lineup now provides, or in this case doesn't provide.

4. The Masters - Once again, a better Sunday when Tiger's in contention - it's beginning to become a cliche to say that.

Charl Schwartzel was the winner, but Tiger's round and Rory's collapse were the take aways from this year's tournament.

After seeing how well he played yeserday, and how well he's always played at Augusta and sometimes so poorly at other tournament (in the last year anyway), I found myself wondering whether Tiger's come to care too much about the Masters, and to a point other majors, and not enough about the other more routine tour stops that most other players partcipate in.

If Tiger put half his focus on more menial tournaments throughout the year, as he does with the Masters, he'd probably be back to being the dominant golfer he was before the marriage scandal.

5. Knicks win, and hold 6 seed - They're a full game up on the Sixers, with two games left to play, just as the Heat are a game up on the Celtics. Now, the Sixers have scuffled without Lou Williams energy, firepower and poise off the bench, so the point of who they play in the first round of the playoffs may be moot, but the Sixers, to even have a chance to steal a series, really need to face Boston, who lack a steady interior presence - benefitting the Sixers - in the first round.

Further than five...
- He's 2-0, with an ERA under one, and could be this year's pitching phenom - the O's Zach Britton. Damn, and I passed on him in my fantasy league.
- The Flyers, who just lost to them last week, one again face Buffalo in the first round of the NHL playoffs - where the Flyers will likely have a very short stay. How dare I even mention hockey after having not written about it all year, right?
- It's been so hard to figure out the Lakers all year. An inconsistent first half, a super run after the All Star break and now they've lost five straight, just one game ahead of OKC for the four seed.
- I can't remember the last time a pitcher struck out fifteen hitters, but that's what Jered Weaver, of the Angels, did yesterday against Toronto.
-- .334 the Phils team batting average which leads all of MLB...by 20 points. They're being much more aggressive this year - yes, swinging at first pitches and early in the count - and it's working out. I say that because of the amount of runs they've scored, and because they have the fifth fewest strikeouts in the league. A very good combination.

Chase's Fox Five 4.7.11

1. Tyreke Evans slams one of the dunks of the year in the NBA...

2. Kyrie Irving exits - If the NBA draft mindse wasn't based solely on potential, Irving would spending another year at Duke. Irving's likely a top five pick, so he can't pass up that opporunity, even with an impending lockout threatened the '11-'12 NBA season.

So what are Irving's prospects in the League? I couldn't tell you. I saw what you saw of him, and that was his performances, one of them a 26 point effort in the Arizona loss, in the tournament.

ThisNBA mock draft has Irving going #2 to the Timberwolves, which would be a indictment to their past point guard selections of Jonny Flynn and Ricky Rubio.

3. Phils outscore Mets - Even with Brad Lidge gone, probably till the All Star break, I never had much concern for the bullpen. Even if their outlook was in question, I thought the team did a nice job of compiling the right guys for the right jobs in 2011. Four and two thirds strong inning of relief last night, did nothing to disprove my thinking.

Also, I don't care if it's just five games into the season, hitting .524, like Ryan Howard is, is darn impressive. Ryan's also leading the NL in RBIs.

Last night's pitching matchup should also disprove the theory that 1s face 1s and 2s face 2s and so on and so forth.

Last night's pitching matchup also shouldn't have occurred. If the Phils miss the playoffs, or don't win the division by a few games, they gave up starts by the aces by allowing Blanton to pitch as the fifth starter even though they didn't need him because of off days. Blanton, imploding in the fifth inning last night, almost proved my point, but thankfully the offense was able to bail the big man out.

4. Sixers shaky - It was a valiant comeback from nearly twenty down, but Toney Douglas and Carmelo did the Sixers in during the final seconds of last night's game.

They now sit a half game behind the Knicks for the six seed in the East, just as Miami is a half game out of the two spot behind Boston.

The Sixers are 4-6 in their last ten, the last two and a half played with Lou Williams, all three games being losses. I still want Boston in the first round, but without a healthier Elton Brand and Williams, I don't know if the Sixers have much of a chance against any first round foe - that's how important Williams and his offense and leadership off the bench are.

5. Rays, Astros, Red Sox all 0-5- The Red Sox should recover from this horrid start, with ease. The Astros, they're just that bad. And the Rays, well I don't know if I blogged this before the season, but maybe outside of first place in the division, but they're capable of finishing at any place in the division - 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th. Right now, because they're befert of bats and offense, fifth place is where they sit and where they could stay quite a white. Without Manny being Manny (the offensive force, not the mental case), and no Longoria for a month, the Rays could be way out of the race before the star third basemen can get back in the lineup. Which spells a long, dreary season for this Rays fan. And limits my desire to watch the team, which has me thinking twice before purchasing the MLB Extra Innings package.

- If the Phils ever became a losing franchise again, people would stop showing up. It would take some years of defeats but after a while there'd be alot of empty seats. It's what happened in the Cleveland after great success in the 90s and it's what may be happening in Chicago after a hundred years of suffering.
- Peanut Butter Kandy Kakes are a new treat CBP this year. Also, nine other new items on stadium menus this season. Sadly, all of these look to be at least fifteen hundred calories of grease and fat.
- Numbers from the Sox sucky start:

The Red Sox have an 8.32 earned run average and a .190 batting average. None of their starters have met the minimum requirements for a quality start (six innings, three earned runs). Jacoby Ellsbury is 3 for 21, and Kevin Youkilis is 2 for 15.
